Mid-American Greek Conference

The Iowa State University Interfraternity Council (IFC) and Collegiate Panhellenic Council (CPC) were honored with the prestigious Jellison and Sutherland Awards (respectively) at the 2008 Mid-American Greek Council Association (MGCA) Annual Conference. Both IFC and CPC executive councils attended the conference as well as National Pan-Hellenic Council and Multicultural Greek Council officers. Thirty-four students attended the conference in total as ambassadors of Iowa State University.

The MGCA Awards are designed specifically to assist councils in achieving the highest level of excellence possible in their programming and council management. The awards outline the actions and policies of an ideal council. As such, if councils utilize the MGCA Awards for goal setting and as a guide for action and visionary accomplishment, they will be well on the road to achieving excellence. This was the 2nd consecutive year that the men have been awarded the Jellison and the 14th consecutive year the women have been awarded the Sutherland.

Both Iowa State University Councils qualify as Division IV competitors. The Sutherland Division IV award refers to councils with 14 or more chapters and the Jellison Division IV award refers to councils with 24 or more chapters.

Councils are scored on the following areas:

  • Academic Achievement Award
  • Council Management Award
  • Leadership & Educational Development Award
  • Membership Recruitment Award
  • Philanthropy & Community Service Award
  • Public Relations Award
  • Risk Reduction and Management Award
  • Self-Governance & Judicial Affairs Award
CONGRATULATIONS to our prestigious community!

Amalie Galm and Dusty Kroll, CPC and IFC council presidents, with the awards.

Sigma Phi Epsilon To Open Membership and Housing to International Students

The men of Sigma Phi Epsilon have decided to allow international students the opportunity to join their fraternity and have created a website to encourage membership. One of their members, Clay Hopes, wanted to make this possible after he extensively studied abroad and wanted to bring a piece of his international experience to the other members of his fraternity. What ensued was much discussion with the Study Abroad Office and within the chapter and ultimately led to the development of the International Opportunities committee.

The following Sig Ep men have put a lot of time and energy into making this possible: Clay Hopes, Sean Regan, Adam Schilling, Zackery Schaaf, and Drew Koeller

Iowa State Alert System

Officials piloted Iowa State's new emergency alert system Friday, February 9, by sending test messages to approximately 31,000 ISU students, faculty and staff.

As quickly as one minute after the emergency message was sent, members of the ISU community began receiving notifications. While data is still being gathered on the test, it appears that the overwhelming majority of users within ISU Alert received notification quickly, with the entire delivery completed in approximately 90 minutes.

ISU Alert is a system for quickly delivering emergency messages to members of the ISU community. Individuals stipulate how they want to receive messages -- via voice message, text message, e-mail or some combination of the three. (Individuals also can opt out of receiving ISU Alert messages.)
