Greek Woman Appointed to Iowa Board of Regends

Greta Johnson, a member of Alpha Gamma Delta, was recently appointed to the Iowa Board of Regents by Governor Chet Culver.

“Greta is a dedicated public servant, and an outstanding student,” said Governor Culver. “She is a great representative of Iowa’s young people, and I look forward to working with her as the newest member of the Iowa Board of Regents.”

Johnson is a junior at Iowa State University, majoring in Political Science. Her previous experience includes service as a page in the Iowa Legislature, leadership roles at Iowa State University, and working as an intern in the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics, where she organized a caucus education workshop.

Johnson’s term will begin immediately. Congratulations to Greta!

"Women Impacting ISU" Calendar--Congratulations!

Congratulations to two Greek women who will be featured in the 2009 "Women Impacting ISU" calendar!

Director of Greek Affairs Jenn Plagman-Galvin and senior Megan Savaia, a member of Sigma Lambda Gamma, were both selected for this honor.

More than 1,000 copies of the 2009 calendar will be distributed free after an official unveiling and recognition reception on Friday, December 5, 2008. The poster will include photographs of the six students and six faculty and staff members who were selected based on their achievements in administration, teaching, research, service, and various other campus activities.

Multicultural Student Center Now Open!

Though its dedication isn't schedule until October 28, the Multicultural Student Center is now open! With over 3800 square feet, the center includes student and group meeting areas, private study rooms, locker space for storage, and much more. Individuals and groups can start reserving the meeting rooms now.


Check it out on the 2nd floor of the Memorial Union, next to the Gold Room!

Kappa Alpha Theta's 60th Anniversary

The Gamma Pi chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta celebrated their 60th year on Iowa State's campus the weekend of October 4. The chapter had approximately 150-200 women come for a tailgate and a brunch.

Leadership Opportunities/Application Information

Iowa State Leadership Experience

The Iowa State Leadership Experience is a new leadership program sponsored by the Student Activities Center, Office of Greek Affairs, and Department of Residence. It is intended to help new and existing leaders on campus improve their leadership skills, learn about leadership opportunities at Iowa State, and network with other leaders from across campus.

Government of the Student Body Opportunity

The Government of the Student Body is looking for student leaders to serve on the 2009 election commission. This year there will be 2-4 openings for new commission members. Duties will include helping apportion senate seats, reviewing/revising the election code, and working with candidates throughout the election process. New members will be seated on the commission within the next 2-3 weeks. The time commitment would average around 2-3 hours a week through the fall semester and 4-5 hours per week in the spring. This is a great opportunity for younger students to get involved on campus in GSB.

Commission Responsibilities and Time Commitments:
*Attend weekly commission meetings
*Assist in reviewing election code and apportioning senate seats
*Help recruit candidates to run for open positions
*Help to enforce election code

Adviser Roundtable-Club & Organization Constitution Writing Workshop

George Micalone, Director of Student Activities, & Lucas Novotny, Student Activities Graduate Assistant, will present information on student organization constitutional requirements. If you are an adviser of a group that doesn’t have an approved constitution, this information would be very helpful to you. Visit www.sac.iastate.edu to preview the constitution checklist and guidelines. All recognized student and campus organizations at Iowa State University are required to upload a current copy of their constitution and bylaws to the Student Organization Database each year at recognition.

Join us Tuesday, October 28 from 12- 1pm, in the Gallery Room at the Memorial Union. Bring a copy of your current constitution for on site review and feedback.

Reggie's Sleepout Opportunity


You can help raise money and awareness for homeless youth in Central Iowa! Sleep in a box, puptent (no stakes) or sleeping bag at the Drake Stadium. There will be food, games, music, educational activities, a Boxed-In Design contest, and a poster design contest.

This year, there is a competition between all the colleges and universities in the area. The institution with the greatest percentage of representation receives a trophy for participation.

MLK Award

Applications are now available for the Advancing One Community Award, 2009

Two individual (one faculty or staff and one student) and one group award, each with a $500 stipend, to be given in conjunction with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on January 22, 2009.

Nominations due in the Office of the Provost, 1550 Beardshear Hall, by November 14, 2008.

Recipients of the awards will have demonstrated commitment to the principles and goals of Dr. King over a sustained period of time through nonviolent actions to create an inclusive multicultural community and/or bring about systematic change aimed at reducing injustice and inequity at Iowa State University.

University Award Available to Seniors

WALLACE E. BARRON AWARD

The ISU Alumni Association is seeking nominations for the 2009 Wallace E. Barron All-University Senior Award. Nominate a deserving ISU senior today! The deadline to receive nominations is Monday, December 1, 2008 by 5 p.m.

The Wallace E. Barron All-University Senior Award was established in 1968 to recognize outstanding ISU seniors who display high character, outstanding achievements in academics and university/community activities, and promise for continuing these exemplary qualities as alumni.

Awardees receive the official Iowa State University Ring from the ISU Alumni Association.

Two to five awards are granted annually and will be conferred in the spring at the Student Scholars and Leaders Recognition Ceremony held on April 5, 2009.

Please note, this award is open to undergraduate students who have senior classification status (90+ credits) and will not have graduated prior to spring 2009.

Global Citizenship: Compassion with Common Sense
Thursday, October 16, 6:00 pm in South Ballroom, Memorial Union
Chris Morrison is the founder and director of Care Highway, a humanitarian aid organization that focuses on improving health through medical missions, enhancing education in developing countries, and delivering aid to areas devastated by conflict and catastrophe. Care Highway accomplishes its mission by sending volunteers into the field to work one-on-one with those in need. They now have projects in Bosnia, Serbia, Africa, South America, and elsewhere.

Managing Financial Crisis: A Panel Discussion
Thursday, October 23, 6:00 pm in Great Hall, Memorial Union
Topics to be addressed include among others: non-performing financial assets, concentration of risk, information concerning risk embedded in derivative instruments, short versus long run liquidity, insurability of risk, Main Streets involvement in making initial loans, gainers and losers from government purchase of mortgage backed securities, potential profits from security purchases, degree of regulatory oversight and its differing implications on alternative financial structures, risk exposure of top executives and Boards of Directors, and crises of confidence.

**There are no University Lectures in the next two weeks that will count towards Snack Session attendance.

Snack Sessions

Snack Sessions are educational opportunities for chapters to learn about specific topics, share ideas and collaborate with chapters in all four councils in hopes to improve our Greek Community.

Snack Sessions are replacing the educational workshops that occurred at the Greek Leadership Conference. To receive credit for the Fraternal Awards of Excellence, chapters must have at least one member in attendance at minimum 6 of the 12 snack sessions.
