Preparing a spring philanthropy with food?
Anyone planning to prepare or serve food for an Iowa State student organization event needs to attend a 60-minute "SafeFood 101" training session. Participants learn how to safely prepare and serve food at temporary food establishments (BBQs, bake sales, fundraisers, etc.) and how to comply with Iowa Food Code even as a student organization with limited resources. Upon completion, each attendee receives a "SafeFood 101" card. Workers should have their cards available to present at all ISU food service events. Food service training is required for potentially hazardous foods that, if prepared or handled improperly, can cause food borne illness (hot or cold food items such as grilled meat, pizza, potato salad, fruit, etc). Training is not required for prepackaged items (wrapped candy, soda, chips, etc.). Spring "SafeFood 101" training dates, all begin @ 6:30 pm: Thursday, February 26 Tuesday, March 10 Reservations are required. More information can be found online at www.riskmanagement.iastate.edu/students/food or by contacting Susie Hamilton at (515) 294-8612.

Story County Youth Volunteer Award nominations being accepted
In celebration of National Volunteer Week and Global Youth Service Day, the Volunteer Center of Story County and Iowa State University Student Activities Center invite you to join us in recognizing the volunteer efforts of young people in Story County. Nominations will be accepted until March 31, 2009. An awards program and reception will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2009, in the Campanile Room of Iowa State University’s Memorial Union. Why is it important to recognize the volunteer service of Story County youth? Public recognition says “Thank You!” to those who have contributed in important ways to the community. It tells young people we appreciate them and encourages them to take leadership roles in Iowa in the future. Also, praise inspires imitation. Friends join with friends to volunteer, and many people can be affected by the example of one individual. In addition, these awards can help youth excel in their future educational and workplace endeavors. Many colleges look for community service in prospective students, and many businesses welcome employees who demonstrate community leadership. Please nominate an individual or group you know in Story County under the age of 25 for their outstanding volunteer service in one of the following categories: - Elementary school student or group
- Middle school student or group
- High school student or group
- College student or group
- Community volunteer or group
Award recipients will be notified by April 15 and invited to an awards program to honor their outstanding volunteer work. They will receive an award signed by Gov. Chet Culver. They also will be featured in local media stories.Nomination form is available at: www.vcstory.org Questions can be directed to: Shellie Orngard (Executive Director, Volunteer Center of Story County) 515-268-5323, shellie.orngard@vcstory.org or Jennifer Garrett (Coordinator of Leadership and Service, Iowa State Student Activities Center) garrett1@iastate.edu, 515-294-4354
