Award-winning chapters and individuals

Recently, an individual Greek chapter and alumni member were recognized by their respective national organizations. Please join us in congratulating the following:

The Gamma Pi Chapter of Delta Tau Delta was awarded the Hugh Shields Award for Chapter Excellence on February 28th, in Arlington, Texas; the award is based on excellence in service, leadership, and involvement. This is the 5th year in a row that the Gamma Pi Chapter has won this particular award and their 20th award total, the most for any Delta Tau Delta chapter in the nation. The Hugh Shields Award is given to a maximum of ten Delta Tau Delta chapters out of 118 total chapters.

Roy Salcedo, alumni adviser for Sigma Lambda Beta, recently won The Salon de Hermandad award from Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc. The purpose is to recognize Brothers of Sigma Lambda Beta who have made a significant impact and contributions to foster the growth and development of the organization. It is the highest award a brother of Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity can receive, and Roy is only the 9th individual to receive this award.

If your chapter or a member of your chapter has recently won awards from your inter/national organizations, please let the Office of Greek Affairs know in order that information can be included in future newsletters.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) Activities

During April, ACCESS (Assault Care Center Extending Shelter & Support), Story County Sexual Assault Response Team (SART), The Margaret Sloss Women's Center, and a number of Iowa State University departments and student organizations will be joining with people throughout the state and the nation to focus the public's attention on Sexual Assault. This is an opportunity to highlight the efforts of individuals and agencies that provide rape crisis intervention and prevention services while offering support to sexual assault survivors, victims and their families.

Sexual violence is a crime of epidemic proportions. It affects everyone. According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (http://www.rainn.org/):
*Every 2 minutes someone is sexual assaulted in the US.
*1 in 6 women and 1 in 33 men will be sexually assaulted.
*In 2007, there were 248,300 victims of sexual assault.
*College age women are 4 times more likely to be sexually assaulted.
*60% of sexual assaults are not reported to the police.

SAAM raises awareness of sexual violence through special events while highlighting sexual violence as a major public health issue and reinforces the need for prevention efforts. Local activities to raise awareness of sexual violence include:

Dead Week Policies

Dead Week is coming again soon, the week of April 27 through May 1. At this time GSB and the Student Activities Center (SAC) would like to remind all organizations of the Dead Week policy as it pertains to student club meetings and events. We encourage all student clubs and organizations to finish all spring semester meetings and events by Sunday, April 26. Students at ISU are students first and club members second, and by following the Dead Week policy your organization helps promote academic success.

As stated on the Dead Week Guidelines policy from the Provost’s Office, no student organization may hold meetings or sponsor events during Dead Week. This is to allow all students the time needed to study for and succeed during Finals Week. If your organization still wishes to hold a small event or meeting during Dead Week, you must first gain permission from the Student Activities Center. Exception forms are available from the SAC.

For more information please e-mail George Micalone, Director of Student Activities, at micalone@iastate.edu or Ryan Kennedy, GSB Director of Academic Affairs, at kennedy@iastate.edu.
